Ottawa loves the winter – that’s because there’s so much to do when the ice finally comes!

Is there any more Canadian activity than bundling up, tying on a pair of skates and getting out onto the ice in the cool, crisp air? Ottawa has plenty of outdoor opportunities for enjoying the winter!

The Rideau Canal Skateway is a beloved Ottawa tradition. When the water freezes on the Rideau Canal, it becomes a 7.8-kilometre long skating rink – the largest outdoor skate rink in the world as recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records! Truly something special, the Rideau Canal Skateway is even recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s something you need to experience if you’re visiting Ottawa in the winter!

The other option for outdoor skating is nearby at Rideau Hall at a rink that was built in 1872! Constructed at the request of the 3rd Governor General of Canada, the Earl of Dufferin, the Skating Rink at Rideau Hall has seen lots of history and hundreds of thousands of skates! Explore history in a fun way!

There’s nothing quite as exciting as a live game of hockey! That’s because the cold makes the air crackle with anticipation as two teams face off for dominance on the ice.

In our opinion, the Ottawa Senators are one of the best teams in the NHL, but we have to admit we’re a bit biased. That’s because we know how incredible Senators home games are! Canadian Tire Centre comes alive every time the Senators take to the ice – consider catching them January 16 vs the Colorado Avalanche!

Love hockey, but the NHL breaks the bank? Then the Ottawa ‘67s are some of the best hockey in the world at a fraction of the price. Either way, you’re covered when it comes to explosive hockey action!

Spending a day in the cold air is great, and totally good for you – but it always helps to know that you’ll have somewhere warm and comfy to return to at the end of the day. That’s why you should book a room at the Best Western Plus Ottawa City Centre for the ultimate in comfort and location.
