Spring has sprung and you know what that means? Tulips! No matter where you live in Canada, you can always mark spring with the arrival of these brightly coloured flowers. However, in Ottawa, we celebrate the blossoming of tulips a little differently.

The annual Canadian Tulip Festival takes place right here in our nation’s capital, and 2021 is no exception.

With COVID-19 restrictions in place, the Canadian Tulip Festival is taking place between May 14th and 24th.

In an effort to discourage Canadians from travelling to Ottawa for the event, the bulk of the event will take place virtually this year. However, it promises to be an immersive virtual experience complete with an interactive online map and even a virtual Tulip Legacy Walking Tour. There is also an online Tulip Boutique, as well as many educational resources explaining the event’s connection with the past.

As fans of the event know, the Canadian Tulip Festival is a celebration of the gift of tulips sent by the Netherlands each year since 1945, after Canada played a major role in the liberation of the Netherlands during World War II. In addition, the Dutch royal family took refuge in Ottawa throughout the war, and it was during this time that Dutch Princess Margriet was born.

Although the Tulip Festival will take place primarily online this year, Ottawa residents are invited to stroll through the millions of tulips on display around the city. The millions of tulips planted in Ottawa come alive mainly in Commissioners Park, typically the festival's main site, which is located alongside the Rideau Canal's Dows Lake. You’ll find all colours and varieties of tulips here, lined up in breathtaking rows upon rows.

Tulips on display this year include the Dynasty Tulip, the Purple Flag Tulip, the Flaming Flag Tulip, the Grand Perfection Tulip, the Apeldoorn Elite Tulip, the Daydream Tulip, and many more.

If you’re heading to Ottawa this month, then you can’t miss the Canadian Tulip Festival. If you need a place to stay during your visit, we’d love for you to book a room at the Best Western Plus Ottawa City Centre.
